As the warmer days dwindle, Chicagoans start looking for hobbies and projects to pick up during the colder months.

Whether you are looking to give your apartment a little makeover or you just moved in and you want to keep things within budget, do-it-yourself projects are perfect for everyone.

You don’t have to be Al Borland or Martha Stewart to accomplish any of these. Just roll up your sleeves, get creative and have fun!

1 • Change your cabinet hardware
Don’t feel the need to stick with the same bland hardware on your cabinets. For as little as $20 you can give your kitchen a total makeover! 2 • Frame your fabric

3 • Make your own floor cushions
Need more seating?  Chairs aren’t your only option.  They are expensive and take up a lot of room if you aren’t using them all of the time. For only around $20 and a couple hours of work you can add some comfy seating and a new print to your living room!

4 • Invisible book shelf
Can’t find that perfect bookshelf to match your apartment? No worries, you don’t need one! With this nifty trick you can turn any used book into it’s own shelf, its as if the books are floating in thin air.

5 • Vintage soap dispenser
If you are looking for a soap dispenser with a little character, no need to go to the big names, head on over to a thrift store and get one for practically nothing! Find a vintage glass bottle , buy an olive oil pourer and you are good to go. Not only will it give an interesting accent to your kitchen, it’s reusable so it’s green too! .
