Welcome to The Purple Pig

March 29th, 2011 · Chicago dining

Not many people probably envision to be eating at a place called The Purple Pig, but they should! Located right off of the Magnificent Mile, this place is a tourist haven and an ultimate destination for shoppers traveling amongst the popular street. Unable to make a reservation at this fine eatery, you must arrive early if you are eager to sit and eat. Aren’t we all?

The Purple Pig is small and if you plan to sit inside, be prepared for excessive chatter and close table pairings. The outside is lovely and heat lamps are laid out to diminish the cold temperatures.

This place is meant to share. There are so many options of unknown foods, but the experience is what makes this dining encounter so fun! I’d suggest starting off with one of the many smears listed. I chose the whipped feta with cucumber smear that came alongside toasted bread, it was a tasteful beginning to the meal. Next hit up the antipasti section, the baby artichokes with fingerling potatoes, asiago and salami toscana were delicious! Now for the salad choices, select the castelfranco, arugula with sunchokes, hazelnuts & apple cider vinaigrette. It is refreshing and simply sweet!

To further the meal, choose from one of the fried items (it’s too hard to resist!) To end the meal we chose two main dishes. You cannot leave without trying the milk braised pork shoulder with mash potatoes (picture above.) This was a staff’s favorite and one of the restaurant’s specialties. Don’t be afraid of the name! If your looking for a seafood item, go for the mussels! They had an excellent flavor and fall on the lighter side. Don’t go home without taking a peak at the dessert menu. Don’t we all need a change of flavor and a little sweetness before getting up? Get the bread pudding with marsala and citrus. It’s not too heavy and has just enough sweetness to leave you satisfied after an all together exceptional meal.

Once you go, I promise you’ll be back.

February 16th, 2011 · Chicago dining

There is nothing more romantic than being in Italy, indulging in the finest foods. Riccardo Trattoria comes close to that intimacy level. Upon entrance you will not want to turn away, the smell of the cuisine will allure you inside.

Don’t let this humble abode and somewhat hidden restaurant keep you away. The Italian family appeal is what separates this place amongst the other Italian features in town. The staff is embracing and their charming Italian accent will whisk you away. Whether it be for a family gathering or on a date, you will find yourself wanting to sit and intermingle for hours. Start off with one of their exquisite red wines as you begin your dine with bruschetta that has been placed on the table. That’s not the only bread available to you, focaccia will be delivered soon, yum!

Be sure to start off with one of the featured salads or “insalate”. Preferably the Caprese or Beets salad with shaved pecorino and mustard vinaigrette. The go-to portion of the menu would be the pastas. The Spaghetti Carbonara with bacon, egg yolk, and pecorino cheese is exceptional! Another special pasta that hit the spot was the Bucatini Amatriciana. Two superb entrees were the Cod Filet topped with diced tomatoes, capers, and basil and the Fish Stew, mixed seafood and shellfish in a spicy tomato broth. Thinking of a meat? The short ribs are tasty and plentiful!

Let your sweet tooth dive into the Tirimusu and take the time to converse with the staff as well, they are cultured and bubbly! Entrapped with all the other locals, you soon will find yourself being apart of this exclusive crowd. Bon appetite!

No Ordinary Kitchen: Sable Kitchen & Bar

February 8th, 2011 · Chicago dining

Sable Kitchen & Bar, a swanky River North restaurant that lies in Chicago’s Palomar Hotel will captivate you upon entrance. It is refreshing and an exceptional dine to indulge with friends or with your latest flame (hint Valentine’s day being just days away).

Sharing plates is the best way to navigate this modern restaurant. It would be too overwhelming to choose just one option with the wide variety enlisted. In addition to a vast array of delectable cuisine comes an extensive list of drinks. Don’t let the small drink sizes deceive you, they are full of alcohol and flavor!

Let’s begin discussing the choices I embarked on. So simple, yet so perfect to begin the meal with. The roasted beets (under the farm & garden portion of the menu) with pistachio crusted goat cheese and honey. Next, diminish the classy effect and dive into the bison short rib sliders with a root beer glaze (see picture below). You CANNOT miss out on these. Also sticking with the farm and garden portion of the menu, the pumpkin ravioli is full of heavenly flavors (picture above). It’s divulged in wild mushrooms, brown butter, sage, and walnuts! As the fullness intensifies, one dish awaits that must be taken advantage of. Under brick oven flatbreads, take on the wild mushroom flatbread with prairie fruits farm goat cheese and truffle oil.

Where are you making reservations this weekend? Make it at this kitchen! It’s trendy and lively. Conversation and people watching will keep you there into the night.

Enjoy!

Beware/Prepare: Snowstorm 2011

January 31st, 2011 · General

If you haven’t heard already, Chicago’s about to get hit. Hit hard. With that said, it’s essential that you follow these selective tips.

1. Dress in appropriate attire. With blistering winds and a temperature in the teens, layers are a critical component. Wool socks, a hat that covers your ears, and boots that prevent slipping & sliding.

2. Food & Drinks. Just in case you are unable to make it down the block to the nearest market, stock up TODAY on plenty of water and food to hold you over for a couple of days. Don’t forget about your furry friend, have his pet food shelf stocked as well.

3. Lights! A big storm in the making could mean a power outage. Everyone should have candles and flashlights available, but if you don’t currently, then head over ASAP to the nearest hardware store or grocery. Check right now to see if the battery is functioning and that you have matches nearby.

4. Technology.
I know it’s hard to believe that we may be without our television set and Internet for a solid 24 hours, but the unexpected might actually become a reality. Once again if the power stops functioning, we need a plan B. In this case, a radio is the best alternative. Keep up to date on all the latest storm news and closings. With that said, also be sure to have your phone and computer charged with full battery. Imagine a day without your cell? Scary thought.

5. Blankets. Just in case the heat stops working, be prepared to get warm under LOTS of covers. Sweaters, fleece pants, and hats are all a must!

6. Shovels & Scrapers. For when you are able to get back out and dig your car out of the snowy white, have a shovel and scraper nearby. Scraping off snow with your bare hands could be a bit chilly. Get the gloves out!

No worries now, you are all set! Bring on the snow.

Stop being such a PAIN

January 21st, 2011 · General

I’ve discovered throughout my years as a roommate, learning to adjust to your living situation is a priority! You may not agree with all that he/she does, you may actually disagree more than agree, but learn to suck it up. We all have our own OCD habits. Whether is be sleeping with the a/c on high, cleaning up immediately after finishing a bite, or having the music blaring as you get ready for work. Understand that your roommate may have his/her own habits that tend to not be in your favor.

After reading Shelterpop’s article, How to Be Easy to Live With I enlisted a few of my own tips on how to avoid turning a roommate against you. Take note.

1. Create your OWN space. Amongst living with one or more people, you need an area that you can make your own. An escape that you can resort to when all else fails or just to calm yourself down if your roommates messiness is driving you up a wall.

2. Just MOVE ON. Plain & Simple, not everyone is perfect. We all have our flaws and instead of pulling out the fangs, sometimes it’s just best to move along and deal with it. If you happen to drag it out, it will only create more unlivable circumstances.

3. Your mess is YOUR mess. Not everyone puts their clothes away as soon as they’ve been removed. Ok, fine. However, keep this mess apart of your individual territory. It is not fair to clutter the living room with mounds of your clothes when other people are living in the same space. Same goes with dirty dishes, don’t leave it hanging in the sink. Despite popular belief, rinsing and putting dishes in dishwasher is not a difficult task.

4. Be happy! There is nothing worse than coming home to a roommate that is always down in the dumps. Living in the confinement of an unhappy person puts everyone down. Why make everyone around you miserable? Put on a happy face. Ask how your roommate’s day was. Be caring & sympathetic.

Of course, we all have our days. Maybe it’s that you’d forgotten to put away your coffee cup, or move your laundry hamper from the hallway, but don’t make this a common habit. Be respectful and mindful of your common area.

Plumbing Tools to Keep in YOUR Home!

January 19th, 2011 · General

Published by HouseLogic.com with additional remarks from Homescout Realty.

Stock these plumbing tools in your home toolbox so you can fix sinks, toilets, and other plumbing problems that may arise.

Plungers: No home should be without these suckers/pushers whose rubber cups form a seal around the drain or toilet. Use a cup plunger to push clogs through sinks and tubs; use a flange plunger, with a non-splash ball cup, for toilets. Use a bellows plunger when the other two don’t work. Cost: Cup, $3 to $4; flange, $8 to $15; bellows, $7 to $11.

Closet auger: Named for “water closet,” this 3-foot plumbing tool has a crank, handle, and flexible shaft tipped with an “auger bit” that breaks and grabs troublesome toilet clogs. Cost: $10 to $20.

Hand auger, aka plumber’s snake: A hand-powered crank and reel of ¼-inch steel cable clears obstructions from sink, tub, and shower drains. Cost: $15 to $30.

Hacksaw: This go-to saw cuts through just about anything–metal pipe, hardware, nuts, or bolts. Keep blades tight in the frame, and keep extras on hand. Cost: $15 to $30. Blades: $5 for 2.

Adjustable pipe wrench: The serrated mouth on this iconic plumbing tool grips pipes. It has one fixed jaw and one that moves by turning a thumb screw. Buy two–one for gripping and holding, one for turning. Cost: $17 to $35.

Hex key or Allen wrench set: Thin L-shaped wrenches with hexagonal heads often are used to fix stuck garbage disposals. Cost: $5 to $15 for a set of 6 to 7 wrenches.

Caulking gun: A metal frame and trigger holds and applies caulk, which seals seams around the edges of tubs and sinks. Cost: $15 to $25.

Tongue-and-goove pliers: Also called water pump pliers or channel locks, these pliers with a right-angled and serrated jaw can turn, hold, twist, or loosen nuts, bolts, fittings, and frozen parts. Buy the 10-inch and 12-inch. Cost: 10-inch $10; 12-inch $10 to $14.
